5 Things Your Groomer Wishes You Knew

Published on 28 July 2026 at 12:11

At Bark & Bubbles NSW, we adore every furry friend who steps into the big red trailer. Over the years, we’ve learned that many owners genuinely want to do the best for their dogs — they just don’t always know what matters most when it comes to grooming.

So for August, we’re sharing five things your groomer wishes you knew. These simple insights can make a world of difference to your dog’s comfort, coat health, and grooming experience.

1. Matting Hurts More Than You Think

Matting isn’t just a cosmetic issue — it can be genuinely painful for your dog. When fur becomes tangled and tight, it pulls on the skin, traps moisture, and makes brushing uncomfortable. Severe matting can even hide skin problems or cause irritation.

Regular brushing at home and consistent grooming appointments help keep your pup comfortable, healthy, and happy. When we talk about matting, we’re not trying to keep them looking cute — we’re trying to keep them pain‑free.

2. Clean Coats Make for Better Grooms

A clean coat is easier, safer, and far more effective to groom. Dirt, oils, and debris make brushing harder and can dull clippers and scissors. When your dog arrives clean and brushed, we can focus on giving them the best possible groom — and they’ll leave looking extra fabulous.

A quick bath at home before your appointment can make a huge difference.

3. Every Coat Type Has Different Needs

Not all coats are created equal! Curly coats, double coats, wiry coats, silky coats — each one needs different tools, techniques, and maintenance.

If your dog’s grooming schedule seems different from someone else’s, it’s because their coat has its own unique needs. We tailor every groom to your dog’s breed, coat type, and lifestyle to ensure they get exactly what they need to stay comfortable and healthy.

4. Nails Need More Attention Than You Think

Many owners don’t realise how quickly nails grow — or how uncomfortable long nails can be. Overgrown nails can affect posture, walking, and even joint health.

Regular nail trims (even between grooms!) keep your dog comfortable and prevent long‑term issues. We’re always happy to help keep those toes tidy.

5. Grooming Is About Health, Not Just Looks

A groom isn’t just a makeover — it’s a health check. During every appointment, we notice skin changes, lumps, bumps, ear issues, coat condition, and behavioural shifts.

Grooming helps prevent infections, discomfort, and matting, and keeps your dog feeling their best. A tidy dog is a healthy dog, and we love being part of their wellbeing.
